Is it possible to turn a room into nothingness? Or to create a room out of nothing? Finding the Real Thing was a site specific installation of paintings, a guided tour and a virtual reality work by Francis Patrick Brady. It reflects on the reality of the white cube gallery space as well as the specific site of Celsius Projects in the industrial area of Malmö. Using Virtual Reality the audience are taken on a journey through non-existent digital rooms and are invited to play with things and no things. They continue out into the gallery of Celsius Projects to explore the real industrial area that surrounds the gallery. Combining a history of nothing with the true story of the Swedish mechanical calculator company FACIT who built the industrial room that is now our white cube gallery in Norra Sorgenfri, Malmö. They were once one of the largest computation companies in the world. Are these virtual and physical rooms full or empty, zero or one, black or white? These multiple secret societies know nothing about each other or each other’s secrets. Yet they are all parts of the same Red Thread. They are totally public and transparent, like a redaction in a public document but totally secretive and private at the same time.&nbsp; This art project, by Francis Patrick Brady featuring Max Ockborn, consists of meeting table for secret societies to gather around, and curtains and a physical red thread to seal off the room from the public. There is also a set of cards that help people who use the room to figure out why and how they are building their own secret society together here. <img width="3144" height="2096" width_o="3144" height_o="2096" data-src="https://freight.cargo.site/t/original/i/8285a25234d6910b1c1d82d7dbf276c9e3f21fc023840200fd1e06836271eb27/two.JPG" data-mid="185775791" border="0" src="https://freight.cargo.site/w/1000/i/8285a25234d6910b1c1d82d7dbf276c9e3f21fc023840200fd1e06836271eb27/two.JPG" /> At some point in spring of 2023 there was a public/private opening of the totally transparent secret society of the Red Thread with several opening and closing ceremonies to help others to join and create their own secret society.&nbsp; “Den Röda Tråden” is a common phrase in Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Germany but in English speaking countries it is quite unknown. It actually comes from the writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe who references the British Navy whose ropes were made with a small red thread inside all them so that it was possible to identify all the rope belonging to the crown and to catch and punish thieves accordingly. Even a small piece of rope would be connected to the larger red thread and signify its ownership. “Den Röda Tråden” then becomes about connecting property and ownership instead of how it is used to signify the interconnectedness and larger meaning of smaller parts. that takes place once every 100 years at Malmö Castle where ‘The Red Robins’, who are a secret society of outlaws, discuss their plans to bring their own type of outlaw justice to the world. All of these outlaws have Robin Hood as their role model and although they all agree on that they have very different politics and views about how outlaw justice should be enacted. “Rob from the rich to give to the poor” for some outlaws it can be to “Rob from the poor to give to the rich”. The society is full of different takes on the original politics, from digital information cryptocurrency outlaws to decolonial warriors, from cultural appropriation outlaws to the popular politics Robin Hood. All we know about these mysterious figures is from the songs we sing and stories we tell about them.
